CAIRO ? Thousands of mourners dressed in black gathered in Cairo on Tuesday for the funeral of Egypt’s Orthodox Christian Pope Shenouda, who was revered my millions throughout the country as a leader for all Egyptians.

Copts felt like “they were nobodies” after Shenouda’s death, mourner Mina Hany Naeem, 17, told NBC News.

“With him I felt like I was wearing white and everyone looked at me, and without him I feel naked and everyone is looking at me,” he said. “When he was Pope nobody ever said Muslim and Christian ? we were all Egyptians.”

Shenouda, who died on Saturday at age 88, promoted religious harmony, winning respect among the Muslim majority, but his last years witnessed a growth in sectarian tension that worsened with the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak last year.

“Pope Shenouda was a father to us all, to all Arabs, a very patriotic person,” mourner Saber Farag Saleh, a 50-year-old construction engineer, told NBC News. “He protected us from divisions. He taught us to love the other and all religions.”

“The Pope was loved by everyone, we were all nobodies without him,” Mina Hany Naeen, a 17-year-old student, told NBC in Cairo on Tuesday.

Religious figures from several countries, including a Catholic delegation from the Vatican, and foreign ambassadors massed in the Orthodox Cathedral as long-bearded Coptic priests wearing bulbous black miters prayed over Shenouda’s body lying in an open coffin, a golden miter upon his head and a gold-tipped staff in his hand.

Christians gather to bid farewell to Egypt’s Pope Shenouda III

A delegation from the ruling military council and several candidates for Egypt’s upcoming presidential elections attended the funeral. Security was tight, with dozens of police and army trucks scattered around the cathedral and plainclothes police posted on bridges and in streets nearby.

The prayers were led by Bishop Bakhomious, head of the church of Bahaira, a district in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, who will temporally hold the post of pope for two months until a new leader is elected.

‘Fix all problems with prayer’
Some mourners worried who would follow Shenouda, who spent his final years trying to comfort a community disturbed by the rise of political Islam.

“It’s a big loss, he looked after us all, it’s a big loss for all Christians and Muslims,” teacher Jaqueleen Mikhail, 25, told NBC News. “Nobody will ever be like the Pope Shenouda, he was humble and full of love and wise. He would fix all problems with prayer.”

Egypt has seen less of the religious violence and discrimination that prompted members of ancient Christian communities to migrate from Iraq and other Arab countries.

But Coptic Christians, who comprise about a tenth of Egypt’s 80 million people, have long complained of discrimination and in the past year stepped up protests, which included calls for new rules that would make it as easy to build a church as a mosque.

“Pope Shenouda was a father to us all, to all Arabs, a very patriotic person,” mourner Saber Farag Saleh, a 50-year-old construction engineer, told NBC News in Cairo on Tuesday.

Shenouda strongly opposed Islamic militancy but strove to quell growing anger among Copts at Islamic extremism, attacks on churches and sectarian clashes often sparked by inter-faith romances and church building permits.

Many Muslims were among the mourners. He was a familiar figure for generations of Egyptians and Muslim Egyptians respected him as a staunch nationalist, an outspoken critic of Israel and a social conservative.

Dr. Essam Arian, ?a member of parliament and the deputy of the Freedom and Justice Party (the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party) said that he was planning to attend the funeral. “We hope the next pope can continue in the path of ?reconciliation.? History will judge him.?

Sheikh Zachariah Mohammed Marzouq, the second?Imam of Al Azhar Mosque, echoed those comments.?

?He was a wise man and a national figure…. He managed by his wisdom to dissolve any kind of conflict between the sects of the nation, the Christians and the masses of Muslims,” said Marzouq. “He was a man inviting peace and love and brotherhood.? We send our condolences to our brothers the Copts on the loss of Pope Shenouda.”

Thousands have paid their respects at the cathedral since he died. For much of the time, Shenouda’s body was put in a seated position on a ceremonial throne dressed in gold and red embroidered vestments.

On Sunday, the cathedral had to close its doors several times in an attempt to contain the crowds. Two mourners died killed in the crush, medical sources said.

The burial is expected to take place at the Wadi el Natrun monastery in the desert northwest of Cairo, where the late pope had requested he be interred.

As the Global Ethics Summit 2012 kicked off in New York last week, a perfect example of the importance of business ethics played out in the real world.

Last week?s Global Ethics Summit, hosted by Ethisphere and Thomson Reuters, couldn?t have been held at a better time. And there couldn?t have been a better location for it than Manhattan. With the very public resignation of Greg Smith from Goldman Sachs announced via his op-ed piece in the New York Times on Wednesday, there was lots to talk about on Thursday morning. The firm?s corresponding 2-billion-dollar drop in value made things pretty clear: Ethics matter.

And so things kicked off with a discussion about what companies can do to promote a culture of ethics and compliance. Brackett Denniston, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, General Electric, shared his thoughts on the subject. Strategies included the standard tone from the top advice, walking the talk and listening. He stressed the difference between the quality of an ethics program and regulatory compliance and talked about the link between ethics and value.

Measured = Managed

In a session on the global compliance outlook for 2012, Erica Salmon Byrne moderated a discussion with three senior level risk and compliance officers on the challenges ahead. Among the nuggets of value in the discussion: what gets measured gets managed. Measuring the effectiveness of an ethics and compliance program is key to keeping a company on track.

Speakers in a session on emerging markets discussed risks of operating in challenging places, how to deal with ?check the box? compliance programs, and how and when to decide whether to do business in a particular country. Speakers shared their successes and failures and strategies for operating effectively and legally in emerging markets.

In a small group session entitled ?return on ethics?, the speakers shared ways their companies use an ethics program to add value. Kelly Clark of Holland America Line and Mark Ohringer of Jones Lang LaSalle talked about the link between an ethical culture and a company?s sucess and the imporance of shared values. ?Values,? said Clark, ?are what you need to make a decision when a procedure doesn?t apply.? Ohringer listed the tangible benefits of an ethical culture, including fraud reduction.

A session on tone from the top raised some pertinent questions. ?Can I be ethically responsible and win?? and ?How do I compete with other companies that aren?t as ethical?? Jack Domme and Jules Kroll talked about strategies for achieving a balance, setting realistic goals and winnowing out bad apples.

Thawing the Frozen Middle

Speakers in a discussion on middle management stressed the importance of training and communication for managers and effective company-wide messaging to explain the processes and outcomes of reporting wrongdoing. They shared strategies that have been successful in involving middle management in the process of building the ethics cultures for which their companies are known.

Three chief legal officers spoke on risks, opportunities and the subjects that worry them the most and three CECOs talked about the evolution of the compliance role in organizations.

In a useful session for CECOs, two board members discussed the kind of information they want from compliance officers. One of the more interesting aspects of this discussion revolved around social media and the revelation that the BOD might be interested in knowing how it?s being used and to what extent it is affecting a company?s ethics and compliance program.

Assistant Attorney-General Lanny Breuer closed out the summit with a keynote address on the US?s role in anti-corruption. The US needs to be a leader in the fight against corruption, he said. Breuer stressed that the DOJ will continue ?forcefully and vigorously enforcing? anti-corruption laws, along with its international partners.

Abdullah Al-Senussi, head of the Libyan Intelligence Service speaks to the media in Tripoli on Aug. 21, 2011.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The arrest of?Moammar Gadhafi’s ex-spy chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, in Mauritania has set off a three-way tussle for his extradition.

Libya has formally requested that Mauritania hand over Senussi, who arrived there Saturday?on an overnight flight.

But Senussi, who for decades before the late dictator’s fall inspired fear and hatred in ordinary Libyans, also is sought by the Hague-based International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity during last year’s conflict.

And France — confirming it played a role in his arrest — stressed his alleged role in the 1989 bombing of an airliner over Niger in which 54 French nationals died.

“Today we confirm the news of the arrest of Abdullah al-Senussi,” Libyan government spokesman Nasser al-Manee told a news conference in Tripoli.

“He was arrested this morning in Nouakchott airport and there was a young man with him. We think it is his son,” he said, confirming a Mauritanian state news agency report that Senussi had been arrested with a false Malian passport arriving from Casablanca, Morocco.

France, which led Western backing for the popular uprising that toppled Gaddafi, said it had cooperated with Mauritanian authorities over the arrest and that it would be sending an arrest warrant to Mauritania.

A statement from President Nicolas Sarkozy’s office noted Senussi had been sentenced in absentia for the 1989 bombing of a UTA airliner, in which 170 people were killed. Families of the victims immediately demanded he face justice in France.

An ICC spokesman said an ICC arrest warrant for Senussi also remained valid and requested that it be implemented.

But Libya’s National Transitional Council?was adamant.

“We insist that Senussi is extradited to Libya,” NTC spokesman Mohammed al-Harizy said. “There are demands from the ICC and France to get Senussi, but the priority is to deliver Senussi to Libya.”

While Mauritania is not a signatory to the Rome Statute governing the ICC, rights groups Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International both said Mauritania was bound by the U.N. Security Council to fully cooperate with the ICC.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement that the Libyan justice system in any case “remains weak and unable to conduct effective investigations into alleged crimes.”

Britain, along with France one of the key Western backers of the insurgency, also cited the need for Mauritania to cooperate with the ICC in a statement attributed to Foreign Secretary William Hague.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Eating more blueberries, apples and pears may be linked to lower risk of diabetes, according to a new U.S. study.

These fruits are loaded with flavonoids, a natural compound present in certain fruits, vegetables and grains, which some research has tentatively tied to heath benefits such as a lower risk of heart disease or cancer.

“People who ate a higher amount of blueberries or apples, they tended to have a low risk of type 2 diabetes,” said An Pan, a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health who worked on the study.

The findings show an association, he added, but don’t prove the fruits, themselves, prevent diabetes.

The new work, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, parallels a study published in the same journal last year associating flavonoid-rich fruits with a reduced risk of high blood pressure.

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 26 million Americans have the disease. It’s caused by a defect in the body’s ability to produce or use insulin, a hormone that converts glucose in the blood into energy.

Type 2 diabetes can usually be controlled with exercise and diet changes and without insulin.

For the new U.S. National Institutes of Health-funded study, researchers tracked the dietary patterns of approximately 200,000 men and women for up to 24 years.

The participants, who were enrolled in three large ongoing studies of American health professionals, filled out regular questionnaires about how frequently they consumed certain foods and beverages of a standard portion size.

None had diabetes at the outset, but about 12,600 of the participants were diagnosed during the research period.

The lightest blueberry eaters in the study reported getting less than one serving (half a cup) of the fruit per month, while the biggest blueberry consumers had two or more servings per week.

Pan’s team found that blueberry-lovers had a 23 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those who ate no blueberries. People who ate five or more apples a week also had a 23 percent lower risk compared with those who didn’t eat apples.

The researchers suggested that certain flavonoids especially high in those fruits might be behind their possibly beneficial effect on diabetes risk.

“We found consistent results across the three (study groups) that apples and blueberries are beneficial for type 2 diabetes,” Pan told Reuters Health.

That was after taking into account other risk factors, such as body weight, cigarette smoking and a family history of diabetes.

These results jibe with an earlier Finnish report related to consumption of berries and apples and diabetes risk.

But these previous studies were much smaller in scope, Pan noted.

He and his colleagues reported no financial conflicts of interest.

While fruit sugar raises blood glucose levels rapidly, other substances in fruit such as fibers and pectin may have diabetes-related benefits, said Dr. Loren Greene, a professor of medicine at New York University who was not involved in the study.

“It argues very nicely for the consumption of whole fruits rather than fruit juices,” she told Reuters Health, citing recent evidence that fruit juices may increase the risk of diabetes.

March 14 - Fitch Ratings believes that a partial or full default of Celpa's and Grupo Rede's debt should have a mild impact on the Brazilian financial system as banks' exposure to Grupo Rede's companies is well dispersed and relatively low. We recently downgraded the national and international ratings of Rede Energia S.A. (Rede Energia) and its subsidiary Centrais Eletricas Matogrossenses S.A (Cemat) to 'C'. This action followed the filing for bankruptcy protection of Centrais Eletricas do Para (Celpa), which is also part of the group, and led to downgrades on Celpa's ratings to 'D'. We believe that the impact of a possible default by these companies on the Brazilian banking system will be small, since the outstanding amount of debt totaled less than 1% of the main creditor banks' combined net interest income and 2% of the combined equity. Even in a case of full credit default, the profitability and capitalization of banks exposed to Grupo Rede risk will not be affected materially given the limited size of exposure in comparison with their capital bases and total revenues. In cases, where exposure to the default is relatively high, we believe that potential losses can be managed effectively without any impact on the banks' ratings. In light of the bankruptcy protection filing's impact on the credit quality of Grupo Rede, short-term obligations of affected banks may become difficult to roll over. This will force some banks to raise loan loss reserves even if a default does not occur. Many of these loans have not been reclassified as they have not become delinquent due to a failure to pay interest or principal, being still classified in rating classes with a low provisioning cushion required by the Brazilian Central Bank Fitch will remain focused on the need to monitor the Celpa bankruptcy protection case and the possible impact on other Grupo Rede companies given the likelihood of lengthy debt negotiations. In particular, we will focus on the bankruptcy protection's impact on smaller creditor banks with relatively large exposure to Celpa and Grupo Rede.
